A PROMINENT Wales-wide food competition was launched in the heart of the county to large public reception.

The launch of the 10th annual Wales The True Taste Food and Drink Awards 2011-12 took place at a ceremony during the farmer’s market on Conwy Quay, attended by producers, dignitaries, traders and members of the public.

The aim of the award is to promote Welsh produce and producers, and this will be the first time that the awards have come to North Wales.

The award ceremony will take place on October 20 in Venue Cymru, Llandudno, and competitors will be drawn from the food and drink production, retail and hospitality sectors from across Wales.

The event will also coincide with Gwledd Conwy Feast.

Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, Leader of Conwy County Borough Council, launched the competition.

Cllr Roberts said: “I’m well aware of the importance and the quality of the food produced in this authority. We are an authority that depends very much on the food industry. And when it's anything to do with food I certainly take an interest!”

Restaurateur, food writer and broadcaster Simon Wright, who is the current True Taste Champion, paid tribute to the increasing quality of Welsh produce, and said that the awards had been a “great catalyst” for change in the Welsh food industry.

He said: “The Welsh food offering continues to flourish thanks to the tireless enthusiasm and passion of the people working in the sector and every year we witness another leap forward in the variety and quality of the Welsh food offering.”

Those wishing to enter the competition can visit the website on www.truetaste.tv. The closing date for entries is on April 15.
