Wrexham Council apologises after widow is told to quit house after husband’s death

A COUNCIL has apologised for telling a pensioner she  would have to move out of her home after her husband died.

Retired hairdresser Pat White was told by Wrexham Council last week she would have to move out of the home on Beech Avenue in Gresford that she had shared with her husband Nev, 71, for 37 years.

The authority has now apologised for the blunder, which left a grieving Mrs White fearing she would be evicted.

Mr White died at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on May 18 from heart failure.

The council told Mrs White she would have to find somewhere else to live because the three-bedroom council house was in her husband’s name.

Speaking to the Leader last week, Mrs White said: “They said I’m going to be evicted from the house my husband was born in. I lived there for 37 years, my husband was born in the house.

“I’ve had all the heartache of my husband dying and then they drop this bombshell on me.

“My son and daughter haven’t got any room, so I can’t stay with them. I’ll be classed as homeless.”

Mrs White’s name had been on the house’s documents in the past, but she removed it when the pair had a disagreement.

“We had an argument years ago and I removed my name [from the agreement],” said Mrs White.

“We made up but I never got round to putting my name back on. Everyone has arguments. You shouldn’t be punished for them all these years later.”

The Leader then spoke to Wrexham Council, while the authority’s deputy leader, Cllr David Bithell, also approached officers demanding answers.

It was then that Mrs White was told the council had made a mistake and said she could stay in her home.

“I was absolutely terrified about losing my home,” said Mrs White.

“My friend spoke to Cllr Bithell about my situation and apparently he phoned the council in the afternoon and demanded that something be done.

“By tea-time two housing officers had called round and told me I wouldn’t have to move.

“It was such a relief as I have enough to upset me at the moment as I still haven’t buried my husband.

“I felt like a big load had been lifted off my shoulders. I’m just so grateful to Cllr Bithell for doing this, even though I’ve never met him, but I hope no-one else ever has to face the disgusting treatment I’ve had.”

Mr White, a retired bricklayer, was a popular member of the local community and a treasurer for Gresford Bowls.

“He was a very well liked man,” said Mrs White. “Everyone in the area knew him.”

Cllr Bithell said: “I asked officers in the housing department to investigate the complaint. I am aware that matters have now been resolved to Mrs White’s satisfaction.

“I have now asked the strategic directors to look into the processes we use to ensure this does not happen again.”

Fred Czulowski, landlord services manager at the council, said: “I am very pleased to say Mrs White will not be asked to leave her property and will be able to remain in her home.

“On this occasion an error has obviously been made and I will be working with staff to ensure that policies and procedures are fully understood to ensure this type of error does not happen again.

“I apologise for any distress caused.”

once again sterling work by our over paid over pensioned public servants. I trust someone was subject to disciplinary action over this, but i doubt it as it may affect their human rights. bring back hanging and the birch

Well at least someone with a little common sence sorted this out, but the housing department being what it is its only a matter of time before it happens again. this is not the first time this has happened and promisses were made that it would not happen again, but it has...we will wait and see.

A great deal more to this than meets the eye ,the lady was not registered as a tenant due to a disagreement in the past? now we have one person living in a 3 bed house in Gresford , IMO , were is the common sense in this?

Agree with liberty1. This lady should be grateful they've let her take the tenancy. If I remember rightly a tenancy can only be changed once so if she's taken her name off the rent book then by law they don't have to let her alter it again, specialy if it means leaving one woman in a FAMILY size home. I bet shes on their waiting list for a move too!!

Also have to agree with liberty1, if her names not on the on the tenancy agreement she should leave. A Family that needs a three bedroom house should be given that house and relocate her to a 1 bed. No wonder there is a housing shortage.

Hi lib, well she is an OAP, and oap's have rights under Eu law, unfortunatly Wrexham council signed a pledge to protect OAP's in that they cannot evict them but can rehouse them in smaller accomodation, I would assume now that under that law she will be asked to move to smaller accomodation after a period of mourning. these sittuations are never easy, the alternative is paying 10's of thousands in compo.

Similar laws apply also to dissabled people, even if there name is not on the rent card, they are protected under EU law.the alternative is as I said before 10's of thousands in compo.

What i disagree with is someone who lives in council property is asked to leave then buys the house, that deprives people who need a home to live in who need it. I know of several ( single people) who have bought 3 bed houses coz its cheaper than renting.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/8555223/Rich-to-lose-their-subsidised-council-homes.html now thats good news.but woul;d require new laws to be made, its a start.

A lot of people dont seem to realise that Eu laws take presidence over our own now, and there are more being implimented every day against our wishes, including Taxes, they now come under the EU that includes council house rents, poll tax, income tax, vat, fuel tax,the list is seemingly endless, and it will get worse under Eu laws.

Liberty1/Speaker of the truth..what's wrong with one person living in a three bedroomed house???Why should she be made to move to a bungalow if she wants to stay where she is.This is not the basis of a housing shortage!! Finacial parasites in the city of London are the basis of the housing crisis.

As I understand it the 1980 Hsg Act allows for only one succession(after this date)and sometimes people fall foul of this legislation(UK not EU law!) Also the spouse of the deceased is allowed to stay in a property regardless of its size-check this out if you like. However, it is about time WCBC thought out of the box, and offered elderly people incentives to move out of these large properties and into smaller ones. This would free up more properties for growing families.

tommy , anyone with a social conscience knows that it is wrong for one person to occupy a 3 bed hse while families are surviving in cramped conditions and as I stated in my 1st comment there is more to this story than meets the eye.

if she can afford to pay the rent let her stay, its been her family home for 37 years FFS. move her to a pensioners bungalow and let some economic migrant or other low life take her house what an option

" a throw away comment based upon fiction? " a throw away comment is an aside, something based on nothing so where does the fiction come in ? or are you just hoping to make mischief?
