Fears over council’s ability to cope with another food scare

FEARS have been raised that Wrexham Council might not be able to deal with another major food poisoning scare.

Members of the environment and regeneration scrutiny committee were yesterday asked to approve the council’s latest Food Service Plan, which details how officers will enforce food laws and control rogue traders.

A report from Andy Lewis, the authority’s head of housing and public protection, says food service officers faced a challenging time last year partly due to the impact of the complex investigation into the E.coli outbreak in July, 2009.

Four people were struck down by the killer bug, including young mum Karen Morrisroe, of Rhosnesni, who nearly died.

The former operator of a fish bar in Llay was eventually prosecuted for causing the outbreak and was jailed for eight months.

Mr Lewis says in his report that conducting the probe has had a major impact on the working of the food safety team over the past 18 months and the department was forced to take on outside contractors to tackle the backlog of routine inspections of food outlets it caused.

There are still 47 outlets ranked as “high risk” awaiting inspection this year.

Cllr Geoff Lowe, Labour member for Acton, said: “If we ever find ourselves in that situation again I hope we would be able to find the assets to investigate it. I hope we would not find ourselves being unable to investigate through lack of resources.”

Cllr Lowe suggested cuts to all council budgets might make the situation even worse.

Toni Slater, service manager for public protection, said: “We do try to maintain a very high profile despite the economic situation.

“We have to focus our resources on the businesses that are not operating properly.”

Miss Slater added the department had been able to obtain enough funding from a Food Standards Agency “fighting fund” to take on an extra part-time officer to work with poorer performing food premises.

missthe point : you can when they make excusses, Wrexham council has over £60million in the bank, money should be no object, and they want us to stand by them when they strike over pensions? cant do the job? sack them.

Wrexham council has no proper chief food hygene officer who is full time, they can pay a part time councillor £47,000 (council leader), they cause rat infestations with there "fair" bin collection service that is targeting the poor and disabled just to grab the extra quid or two.

Inmyopinion- no you cant. Council employees come in all shapes and sizes and your average employee just wants to get on with the job in hand and provide for our families. Give us a break please

Have to agree with that....having had a boiler changed last Friday by the Council...taking less than two weeks from initial contact to completion with an excellent job done by Cliftons of Wrexham....well done to the Councils staff member Jonathan

Why is it always the same whinging , moaning , glass half full brigade who think they know everything and could do everything better than anyone else? If these people are so adept at everything why are they not running/employed by the likes of the council instead of being on this website morning ,noon and night putting the world to rights?

lib, because we have freedom of speech? because we feel that councils are not doing what they are paid to do, because they want mopre and more money but less services for that money. What about the couuncil drivers parked up in quiet country lanes having a kip mid morning or afternoon getting paid for nothing? Ok there are a few good ones but most are plainly at it.

Why does it take three people to check if a bin is full of the right type of rubbish? one worker to delve into the bin, but not empty it, and two recycling inspectors to verify the bin has the correct type of waste. why two inspectors? both (acording to them) fully qualified.

lib, what would you do then when something goes wrong or your not getting what you paid your hard worked money for? you like the rest of us will be forced to complain... but the council does not do complaints, they shirk the responsibilities they are paid good money for. or do you sit back and let them keep refusing to deal with important issues, like food hygene?

Inmyopinion talking rubbish again very fitting

IMO , have you ever wondered how much you cost the council in wasted time?

  13. Posted by: InMyopinion at 15:13 on 25 June 2011 Report

lib, seeing I pay my taxes, none.

  14. Posted by: RubyMilkychops at 19:39 on 27 June 2011 Report

IMO so do council staff! We see the ineptitude of the top heavy system every day, whilst also seeing our wages, pensions, working conditions and the service we give to the public eroded on a daily basis. The idiots that run the council carnivals are pathetic, dont attack the staff on the ground who, on less money than the private sector, true,

  15. Posted by: RubyMilkychops at 19:41 on 27 June 2011 Report

I have worked for both! Who at a phonecall turnout to deal with floods, road accidents, bad weather, blocked drains, burst pipes etc, at far less than the smug idiots that run the show,Also the carestaff, school cooks etc whos wages are way lower than in private sector

  16. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:17 on 27 June 2011 Report

IMO , I am sure the cost of the time you waste far exceeds the taxes you pay .

  17. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:30 on 27 June 2011 Report

RM , very true what you say , people like IMO expect all the services but act like spoilt kids because everything has been at their beck and call , they are the ones who will feel the cuts most when they start to bite and will squeal the loudest.
