JOHNNY may have been rotten, the Captain was sensible and Sid quite vicious... but Phil is far from evil.

Parishioners had a shock last week as their own punk vicar gave them a taste of his anti-establishment music.

The Rev Phil Chew is responsible for five churches around Llanarmon yn Ial and took up his post at the end of last year.

But Phil also fronts secular punk band Revisit, who played at the Raven Inn in Llanarmon yn Ial on Saturday.

And he went down a storm.

Revisit’s members first met after playing alongside each other in bands in the early 1980s and have now merged together to continue touring.

They have found success across the UK, playing charity gigs for Marie Curie Cancer Research, at Kirkham Prison, for the BBC and were the first band to play on the top of Blackpool Tower.

“It was our first gig in Wales on Saturday and we played music from the 70s and 80s as well as our own material,” said Phil.

“It went down really well, they wouldn’t let us off the stage at the end, we were playing until gone midnight. “

There was a really wide age group there. Loads of people showed up with many from the churches. “

People are surprised I play in a punk band. Someone said to me ‘I can’t believe you’re a vicar, I thought vicars led boring lives’.

“He said ‘I didn’t realise you actually had fun too’.”

Audiences can expect to hear a range of original material and punk classics including Gordon is a Moron, I Used to Hate Ya, Chastity and Burning Desire.

Llanarmon yn lal county councillor Christine Evans said: “I saw him play on Saturday and he was great.

“He is very charismatic with a great voice.

“The jokes he tells in between songs weren't too bad either.

“I don’t think it makes a difference at all that he is a vicar and in a punk band. It doesn’t detract from anything he is doing.

“If anything, I think it may make more people interested in religion if they see that you can be as trendy as him and be a vicar too.”

Mr Chew is part of a tradition of priests in popular music, including soul singer the Rev Al Green and former Communards star Richard Coles, now a vicar in Northamptonshire.
