How to compare electricity prices

With all of the variables surrounding electricity prices you may feel confused and overwhelmed when considering your options. Your electric bill is likely the largest part of your utility budget, and rising costs may prompt you to research the companies in your area other than the one you currently use. Make sense of the cost of electricity by understanding what you are being charged for.

Each time you use 1,000 watts of power, you are using one electricity unit. Your electric company charges you a set amount of money per unit used. In simple terms, the more units you use, and the more that your particular company charges, the higher your bill. In reality, though it is not quite that simple. Each company sets their own rate, but this fluctuates based on the price of gas in your area, because nearly half of the power stations in the UK are fuelled by gas. As gas prices rise, so does your electric bill, depending on how much your company relies on gas.

Another consideration is the time of day that you use most of your appliances. Many companies offer reduced rates to consumers who agree to use their energy-consuming products during certain hours of the day or night. So using a company with a higher overall rate, but with a bigger discount on off-peak hours may make the most sense for your particular situation if you are able to save most of your electric use, such as running washing machines and clothes dryers, for the evening or very early morning hours.

One way to keep your electric bill more stable is to ask if your company has a budget plan. This type of plan averages your yearly electric usage, and bills you 1/12 of the total each month. With this arrangement, you pay the same amount of money each month, even though your electricity usage fluctuates month to month. A company which offers this type of billing plan may be best for you, even if they charge a slightly higher cost per electric unit.

It would take a lot of time to call every possible electricity supplier to ask about their electricity prices, but that is what you would have to do in order to compare prices. Then you would need to make a chart detailing all of the plans and packages available that might benefit you. You could use a service that does this legwork for you; this way, you would save time and energy and would simply need to switch to the company that would work best for you after the research is completed.

Whatever you choose to do, be sure to re-evaluate your electric bill and usage every year, because chances are good that your electric usage, as well as your power company's electricity prices will change over time, making it necessary to make adjustments to be sure that you are getting the best deal possible. Be an aware consumer so that you are not surprised by higher-than-normal electric bills.
