A COLWYN Bay runner has been selected by an Olympic legend to take part in a special education day for promising athletes.

Tom Earley, who runs for Colwyn Bay Athletics Club, was one of a handful of young sports starts chosen by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes to take part in the Future Stars with Kelly education day at Loughborough College.

Tom was nominated after a superb performance at the Aviva Welsh School Championships over the summer, winning the 800m and finishing fourth in the 1500m, and was put through his paces on the day, which aimed to educate participants on how to make the transition from junior to senior athletics.

Kelly said: “Tom really got stuck in and applied himself well in all the workshops.
“I hope the day has taught the Future Stars how to overcome challenging situations that they may face both in and away from athletics during their teenage transition from junior to senior athletics”

Tom took part in a number of workshops on athletic issues including anti-doping and injury prevention, as well as pushing his skills through tough fartlek and circuit training sessions

He said: ‘It means a lot to me that Kelly wants to help young athletes do as well as they can and I am delighted to be a part of it.

“I have really enjoyed working with top class athletes on the Future Stars Education Day. It has taught me so much more about the sport."
