Decorating your home can seem stressful. There are so many options, and it can seem almost impossible to know how to translate the idea in your head into the rooms you use the most. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to get the look you really want for your home.

Think of a theme

The first thing you need to decide is the unifying theme of the room. It doesn’t have to be a gimmick like ‘1950s living room’ or ‘feng shui futurism’. Just having a simple idea in mind can help you buy items that work together. For example, natural fabrics and materials almost always look great together. Mixing items like wooden bookcases, wicker baskets and leather sofas can mean your living room will have a unifying theme, bringing nature in, without being too conceptual.

If you feel more confident in your interior design skills, you can bring two or more aesthetic styles together for a more complex look. This has even more impact if you mix two styles that seem like they should clash. Doing something like ‘nature in the future’ could make an even stronger style statement than the two would alone.

Group small items to make a larger piece

You can make a striking focal point by grouping together smaller items that are similar to each other. Hang lots of photographs in various frames to make a unique piece of wall art, or group together things that have a similar style, colour or shape into a cool display.

The wonderful thing about grouping your objects or pictures together is that you are able to create a work of art that reflects your personality and is totally unique to you.

Unify the room with colour

Using one colour or shades of one colour can tie a room together. Colours like green and blue are calming, whilst yellow and orange are energising. Pick one colour, and use a variety of fabrics and material to add interest to the room.

Just remember to keep it balanced, though: too much of one colour can be overwhelming. Keep the colour to accents, and make sure the big items like sofas are neutral colours. Alternatively, you can have a brightly coloured sofa with neutral walls. All you have to do is make sure it is all balanced.

Transparent items make a room feel bigger

If you have a small space, decorating can seem even harder. After all, there are only so many places any one thing can go. There are some tricks you can do, however, to make the space feel bigger. One of those things is to use transparent tables and chairs. There are many options and price points for clear furniture, and they can fit into any decorative style and colour scheme. Best of all, they seem to simply disappear, so the room seems less cluttered.

Simplify with simple lines

Most people want to simplify their lives and, by extension, their homes. It’s easy to make rooms look sleeker by incorporating pieces of furniture that are streamlined. Though you may think simplifying the look of your décor means throwing out all of your stuff and replacing it with furniture that doesn’t look like furniture and isn’t big enough for everyone to use. In fact, you can buy plenty of furniture, like corner sofas and big bookcases, that are both simple and useful.

Bring in flowers

Finally, you can really brighten up a room by bringing in flowers. Just pick your favourite flowers or buy a cheap and cheerful bunch from the supermarket. Whether or not the colours of the flowers match the room the arrangement is in, they will look gorgeous. After all, there is just something about a vase of flowers as a centrepiece on a dining table or on a side table that makes a room look truly finished.

There are many other small things you can do to make your home look the way you want, but if you start with these ideas, you’ll be well on your way.
