DENBIGH Town U-14s dodged the Pumas’ bite to get their Rhyl Junior League campaign back on track.
Their first league game since November 19 was a repeat of the previous weekend’s League Cup game, with Denbigh running out 4-2 winners at Rhyl Hearts Pumas.
With the Pumas missing a couple of key players, Denbigh took an early lead when skilful left back Ynyr Clwyd set-up Ashley Andrews.
A minute later and Denbigh scored again after Josh Morris' long shot bounced over the diving keeper's arms.
After just six minutes, it appeared as if the Reds were going to score a hatful.
To the Pumas' credit they did not give in and, urged on by their coach, they gradually began to impress on the game.
Denbigh maybe should have scored a few more were it not for the heroics of Rhyl keeper Luke Davies, who seemed to be in a continual one-on-one contest with Ifan Jones.
Pumas worked hard and had their reward when Nathan Cullen's cross shot from the left went in off the post.
Denbigh looked the stronger team early in the second half and an inch perfect pass from defender Ynyr Clwyd played in Ifan Jones to make it 3-1.
Against the run of play, Jordan Cemaloglu pulled one back with 12 minutes to go after a free kick on the edge of the box.
The referee indicated yet another infringement minutes later and this time Denbigh keeper Daf Montgomery pushed the resulting shot onto the crossbar and it bounced out to a Pumas forward, who blasted over from six yards.
It was left winger Gruff Roberts who helped Denbigh into the comfort zone with a wonderful match-winning run from near his own penalty box, beating player after player until he whipped a cross in from near the corner flag.
It was met by Andrews, who delighted in smacking the ball into the back of the net.
