GOALKEEPER Joslain Mayebi has ambitions of achieving full international recognition with Cameroon.
The Wrexham number one was selected for the Cameroon national team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing but did not appear in any matches, and the 25-year-old was also named in the squad for a World Cup qualifier against Togo in March 2009 but again did not feature.
But a series of impressive performances this season in the Wrexham goal have not gone unnoticed and Cameroon manager Denis Lavagne, who took charge of the national team in October, has been in contact with Mayebi and is due to come and see him play.
And while he admitted it would be an honour to represent his country, Mayebi admitted his priority is winning promotion to the Football League with his club.
“The coach might come to see me over the next few months because Cameroon haven’t got any friendly games,” said Mayebi.
“He said he was going to come and watch me play. I spoke to him in December, he said he knows about me, is watching how I am doing and will come and watch me.
“We are talking together, and the assistant manager also knows me because he was my coach for the under 23 side at the Olympic games, so they all know me.
“That is very nice for me but the most important thing for me is Wrexham because we want to get promotion to the Football League.
“I would be very proud to play for Cameroon but that is a bonus.
“You need to be very good at your club and then you go to the national team. If you don’t play well for your club, you don’t. So that is why Wrexham is most important, staying here and playing in the league. So let’s wait and see.”
Mayebi, who made his Wrexham debut in a 1-1 draw at Luton Town last April, has nailed down his place as first choice goalkeeper after taking over from Chris Maxwell in September.
With Wrexham easily boasting the best defensive record in the Conference – the Reds have conceded just 19 goals in 30 league games – player-manager Andy Morrell was eager to retain the services of Mayebi who has signed a new contract that runs through to the end of the 2013-14 season.
“I was delighted to sign my contract,” said Mayebi. “It is a continuation of my story with Wrexham.
“I needed to be happy and secure which I am, and want to keep playing for Wrexham.
“Hopefully that will be in a higher division next season which is the main thing.
“We don’t want to stay in the Conference at all, we wanted to get promotion last season but I think this season is the one.
“Everybody is focused, we have got 16 games left and we will try and win them all. We will stick together, everyone is one, which is the best thing.”
But Mayebi, who has previously played for teams in Cyprus and Israel, refuses to get complacent and believes there is still room for improvement.
“I have been pleased with my performances,” he said. “I am more confident now but there are always things to work on.
“You can never be entirely happy so I still work on parts of my game with Michael Oakes.”
Meanwhile, Wrexham reserves’ Central League game against Macclesfield Town, which was due to take place at Colliers Park yesterday afternoon, was postponed because of a frozen pitch.
