COUNCILS in Conwy and Denbighshire have announced potential rises in council tax.

Householders across North Wales will have to find extra savings in their budgets as council tax rises are planned for both authorities.

Reports have gone to both authorities, suggesting a 4% increase in council tax in Conwy, and a 2.8% rise for Denbighshire.

This would see Conwy's annual precept for Band D properties rise from £850.59 to £884.61 - adding about another 60p per week for homeowners in that band.

Conwy's Principal Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Monday supported the recommendations in the report, which will go to a full council meeting on Thursday February 23.

Cllr Meirion Hughes, Conwy's cabinet member for finance and resources, said the report had been considered “very carefully and in great detail”.

In a budget report to Denbighshire County Council, it was recommended that members approve a 2.8% increase in their Band D precept of £1024.30, rising to about £1052.98 - equivalent to another 55p per week.

According the report, informal reviews suggest Denbighshire will be setting the second lowest council tax rise in North wales for 2012/13.

The budget report went to Denbighshire County Council on Tuesday, February 7.
The total rates owed by homeowners will be added to by precepts set by town and community councils, and the North Wales Police Authority.
