A LONG awaited supermarket and filling station is set to open by the end of this month.
The site in Berwyn Street, Llangollen, was bought by independent supermarket Stans, based in St Martins near Oswestry, last June after 30 months of negotiation with the previous owner.
The filling station was originally scheduled to be open before Christmas, but the opening date was put back.
This week Andrew Faulks, a partner at the company, has told the Free Press completion is now in sight.
“We’re hoping to open before the end of the month,” he said.
“We’ve had one or two problems this week but are hoping by next week we will have a
definite date.”
The whole site was flattened to make way for the 3,000 sq ft supermarket at the end nearest to the traffic lights at the corner of the A5 and Castle Street.
The new filling station will have four double-sided pumps providing eight bays for customers and a car park will also be on site.
“We’ve got 28 staff including five existing employees,” said Mr Faulks.
“ Most of them are from the Llangollen area.
“The store will be open from 7am until 10pm seven days a week. We might possibly close a little bit earlier during the winter.
“The car park will have 12 spaces, we’ve got as many spaces as we can possibly have on the site, there’s a lot of local car parking in the area.”
Stans has signed a deal with Texaco for the filling station, whilst inside the store there will be four tills and customer toilets.
“We’ll be selling our usual convenience store products including a full range of beers, wines and spirits and fresh food,” added Mr Faulks.
Ian Parry, Llangollen Town Council clerk, said: "As far as the town council is concerned we welcome Stans primarily because of the petrol.
“We haven't had a petrol station here for a number of years so it will be a real bonus for the town."
Currently the nearest petrol station is an independent garage five miles away in Acrefair.
