CALLS have been made for cycle lanes to be installed on a busy road.
Sandy Lane in Saltney is a well-used route for cyclists including many children who cycle to St David’s High School.
Flintshire county councillor Klaus Armstrong-Braun, who represents the Saltney ward, said cyclists are forced to ride on the pavements or the road.
He said: “Some ride on the pavements, but it’s very narrow so they have nowhere else to cycle but on the main highway.
“It’s not safe for the kids going to school. If there were cycle lanes, then it would also slow the traffic down.”
Cllr Armstrong-Braun has now written to Carl Longland, Flintshire Council’s director of environment, calling for cycle lanes to be introduced.
He has also requested Mr Longland identify other roads across the county where cycle lanes could be created. Cllr Armstrong-Braun added: “We want to get people out of cars, yet we are not making provision for cyclists.”
Neal Cockerton, head of assets and transportation, at Flintshire Council, said: “The council, as part of the North Wales Regional Transport Plan, is committed to developing and encouraging sustainable modes of transport throughout the county with cycling being one such mode of sustainable transport.
“In relation to this specific suggestion, there would need to be due consideration of a child’s ability, confidence and training in the safe use of a bicycle on the highway network and this would form part of a package of measures which would need to support any such initiative.”
