Hammer raid on off-licence

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a terrifying armed robbery at an Ellesmere Port off-licence.

A balaclava-clad man brandishing what was believed to be a hammer burst into Port Wines in Hope Farm Road shortly before 9.20pm on Tuesday.

He shouted demands at a female shop assistant who fled in fear.

The man then grabbed the lower half of the till and ran off from the shop.

The robber is described as white with a stocky build. He was wearing a black beanie hat over a balaclava, a long sleeve top, dark coloured pants and dark coloured shoes.

Cheshire Police are asking anyone who witnessed the robbery or who saw anything suspicious to come forward.

Detective constable Gavin Hastings said: "Thankfully the shop assistant was uninjured during her ordeal, but she was left shaken.

"To help us in our investigation, I would urge anyone who saw a man fitting the description approach the shop around this time or when he was making off from the scene to get in touch."
