BEESTON Castle’s ‘Discovery Visit’ programme for schools which brings history to life by merging hands-on historical interpretation and costumed storytelling has won a prestigious Sandford Award.
The award recognises quality and excellence in education services and facilities at Heritage Education sites and puts Beeston Castle firmly on the map as a ‘must-see’ site for education groups.
The Discovery Visits available at Beeston Castle were cited by the judges as a key factor in their decision, as they provide children with an engaging way to explore the site imaginatively and broaden their historical knowledge.
The sessions, led by specialist educators and trained site staff, are designed to encourage active participation, bring the past to life and exploit the immense cross-curricular potential of the property in question. In addition they are tied into core subjects at each Key Stage.
The wider educational offering at the castle was also judged by Marilyn Sumner and Beeston Castle passed with flying colours. She said “unspoilt” Beeston Castle is “a stimulating site for pupils to develop their enquiry skills. What, When, How and Why? “The questions that encourage pupils of all ages and abilities to use their senses and their imagination in the outdoor learning environment can, and are, being applied here.”
This year a total of six English Heritage properties were awarded a Sandford Award, the industry’s top accolade, taking the total number held by English Heritage to an outstanding 18. Presented by the Heritage Education Trust, the Awards recognise informative, interesting and well-managed excursions for education groups.
English Heritage’s head of education, Tina Corri, said: “It’s so rewarding to see the children enjoying their time with us and learning about the history of a property through the hands-on activities we offer.”
