A SHOPOWNER has high hopes after a politician nominated him for a top award.
Andrew Miller, MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, has put forward David Maddock, who runs Stanney News, for the Small Shop of the Year award 2010.
Mr Maddock recently took over the building, in Stanney Lane, which had been derelict in the town centre area for a number of years.
In the competition, each small shop will be judged on product, family/history, innovation, originality, investment and sustainability. A shortlist will then be drawn up by members of the All Party Parliamentary Group and a winner selected by an independent person from the business community.
A reception at the House of Commons will be held early this year to celebrate the success stories and to name a winner for the title of Small Shop of the Year.
Mr Miller said it was great to see an independent retailer entering the market so enthusiastically and putting in such investment into the local area.
He said: “I was delighted to support Mr Maddock. His shop was full and vibrant, a true corner shop. I am confident of Mr Maddock’s success.”
