MINDLESS yobs on a Chester housing estate have been kicking down walls and hurling the bricks at nearby cars.
Police have today announced a major clamp down on problem youths in the Stamford Road area of Blacon following a growing list of incidents - including a wall being destroyed by gangs.
Community leaders have slammed the “mindless” acts and one terrified resident has told how his life is being made a living hell by constant bouts of anti-social behaviour and threats to his safety.
The resident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, said: “Such incidents of violence and vandalism have been happening for a while now, but it has escalated out of control. I am just one of many people living in the street who will not venture beyond my doorstep for fear of being targeted. It has to stop.”
The resident said he had witnessed a string of late night attacks on residents and properties in the street at the hands of a gang of vandals.
The street is now the subject of regular high visibility police patrols as part of an operation led by Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Reggie Jones, Blacon councillor, said: “It is most regrettable that the image of Blacon is spoilt by a few mindless acts of vandalism. Blacon councillors have spoken to police about such hotspots on the estate and are confident that the police are acting very positively in their patrols of the areas concerned. We call upon residents to highlight acts of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Residents take pride in their community and collectively we are working hard to maintain a safe and positive image.”
The incidents come just two weeks after a vandal attack at the Old Station site, off Highfield Road, in which vandals spray painted graffiti on the fencing at the newly revamped site.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward as investigations continue in to the incidents of criminal damage in the Stamford Road area.
Sgt Darren Griffiths, of Chester outer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This operation relies on information from members of the public. I would encourage people to report anti-social behaviour so a record can be kept and evidence gathered for any future action.
“Anyone who knows who caused the damage to the wall and vehicles on the street is also asked to call us and let us know who is responsible.”
