The cycle way which is closed as work to improve it is carried out.

A POPULAR cycle route through Chester will be closed for up to eight weeks as work to improve and create further links to other networks across the city gets under way.

The Millennium Greenway has been closed between the Brook Lane/Northgate Ponds access route and the Shropshire Union Canal towpath, near to the Deva Link, since the start of the month with works expected to continue halfway through April.

Transport officials from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) have written to residents informing them of the changes as work gets under way to create the new cycle and pedestrian route.

Works will also include a new ramp for what the council say will provide easy off-road routes to the Shropshire Union Canal and Deva Link road.

Meanwhile the council say a temporary traffic management system will be put in place at the Brook Lane access to allow construction vehicles to access the works. Access points from Liverpool Road (at Total Fitness) and Queensgate will also be closed for public safety.

A council spokesman said: “This project has been funded by Cycling England which is the Department for Transport and also Sustrans, through their Connect2 National Lottery funding.

“Work started on March 1 and over a ten-week period, a new cycle and pedestrian route will be built from the existing Millennium Greenway, between Parkgate Road and the Deva Link Road.

“This new ramp will provide easy off-road routes to the Shropshire Union Canal and to the Deva Link Road creating easy access to other cycle and walking networks across Chester.

“The Millennium Greenway is an important off-road route for all users and other sections can still be accessed at Northgate Ponds and via the canal access from the Blacon side of the Greenway closure.”
