LLANGOLLEN TOWN 2

GARETH Lloyd’s Llangollen Town gave themselves a real chance of avoiding the drop by completing a fine league double over Llanfairpwll.

Two first half goals eventually proved to be sufficient for the Tower Fields side, who made it back-to-back league wins for the first time since August.

Llangollen had beaten Llanfairpwll on the opening day of the season in their first ever Cymru Alliance encounter, but the return fixture was arguably a bigger match-up for the Denbighshire side, who are desperate for points to climb clear of the lower reaches of the league standings.

The visitors were in control by the break.

They had a dream start when Gary Ellison and Richard Vaughan Jones gave them the early advantage and Llangollen were not going to relinquish their lead as they maintained their recent good run.

Iwan Williams managed to pull one back for the home side on 67 minutes, but Llangollen held on for the points, even without keeper Adam McGee who was dismissed for two yellow cards.

Automatically, Llangollen thoughts now turn to the fixtures they have remaining to ensure that they end the season in the Cymru Alliance top-eight.

Only three of Llan’s remaining 12 fixtures are against teams in the top-five, while four of Llangollen’s other nine matches are at home to fellow bottom-eight sides.

It could very well all come down to Llangollen’s last fixture of the season, at second-from-bottom Caernarfon Town on May 1.

Llangollen have games in hand over every other team in the Cymru Alliance and they now find themselves just eight points adrift of eighth-placed Ruthin, with two games in hand.
