TEACHERS from across the region are being encouraged to travel abroad this summer to work with underprivileged children.

GapGuru, one of the UK’s leading ethical gap year providers, is encouraging people who work in education in Cheshire West and Chester to sign up to its ‘Travelling to Teach’ programme.

The scheme, now in its third year, is looking for 30 “inspirational” teachers to work with poor children across India, Nepal and Tanzania for three weeks over the summer break.

Managing director of GapGuru, Arvind Malhotra, said: “After two very successful years, we are once again looking for UK teachers to help to improve the standard of education for underprivileged children in India, Nepal and Tanzania.

“We are specifically looking for volunteers in Cheshire with dedication and talent who can use their skills working with schools providing education in some of the poorest parts of these countries.”

He added: “GapGuru works with a number of charity schools which provide education to children from some of the poorest parts of India despite having extremely limited resources.

“We are looking for qualified teachers, English language teachers and those with an aptitude for drama, arts and crafts, music or sport to work with the teachers at these schools, run a programme for the children and really make a difference.

“The children are keen to learn new skills, and in many cases, our volunteers will learn from them too so this is an exciting, and perhaps even life changing, opportunity.”

The trip lasts three weeks, from August 2 to August 20, and gives teachers the opportunity to explore the world while making a difference in some of the most deprived areas.

The final deadline for applications is May 31.
