LOCALdoctors' surgeries could soon be one of the places for young people to get advice about training or finding work.
Wrexham Council has been working on its own schemes to help youngsters who are not in education, employment or training and it has responded positively to a request from Jobcentre Plus for this work to be aligned with the Social Housing Outreach project.
At a national level, Jobcentre Plus Outreach advisers will work with partners, such as housing associations, residents groups, local authorities and local community organisations, to reach more than 15,000 people and to tackle deep-seated unemployment.
Locally, teams can decide on the best way to provide intense support to suit their areas.
This could range from setting up adviser sessions in doctors’ surgeries to visiting benefits claimants in their own homes.
Wrexham is one of 16 areas planning for the scheme and the next step will be for the council to agree to extend its existing Better Education and Skills for
Employment scheme so that both initiatives can work side by side.
A council spokesman said: “The bringing together of these two initiatives illustrates the steps which are being taken to deal with levels of youth employment and employability in Wrexham.”
