MUSIC lovers are being invited to two “exciting” live concerts being held at Chester Cathedral next month.
The first event is a showing of the original 1925 silent movie of The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked and facially deformed ‘phantom’ who haunts the Paris Opera House.
Live musical accompaniment for the film will be performed by world-renowned organist David Briggs on Chester Cathedral’s grand organ.
Tickets for the event, at 7.30pm on May 1, are £10, £12.50 and £20 for VIP premium seats with the chance to meet David Briggs at a post concert drinks reception.
The second event, at 7pm on May 22, will feature Chester Cathedral’s Nave Choir joined by the famous 18th Century Concert Orchestra to perform the full score of Handel’s ‘Messiah’.
Cathedral spokesman Nick Fry said: “The debut performance of ‘Messiah was in Dublin in 1742. Interestingly Handel’s ferry crossing to Ireland was delayed by bad weather and he actually conducted a final rehearsal in Chester Cathedral.”
Tickets are £15 (£13.50 concession) and £25 for VIP premium seats which include sparkling wine and canapés during the interval.
To get tickets go to the Cathedral box office, go to www.chestercathedral.com or call 01244 500959.
