AFFORDABLE housing in Wrexham should be put where it is needed, councillors have said.
Outline planning permission for four separate affordable housing developments in Wrexham were given the go-ahead by councillors at a planning committee at the Guildhall.
But councillors stressed that affordable housing should be focused where there is demand.
The developments being considered include two sites in Caia Park, one near the town and another at Gwynfryn.
Speaking about Gwynfryn, Minera Cllr David Kelly said: “A rural housing survey in Minera showed that none of the need was in Gwynfryn.
“We are fulfilling obligations of the strategy but we are not necessarily putting them where we need them.”
Speaking about the same development, which would include five properties on a 1,500 sq metre site at Maesteg, Rossett Cllr Hugh Jones said: “We need to ensure where we are building affordable housing it relates to the needs.
“It is similar in Rossett where we have a need for single-storey homes.
“Over the years we have allowed bungalows to be knocked down and replaced with seven-bedroom mansions.
“It’s important it’s related to the need of the specific area.”
In Caia Park the plans include 17 units at a 7,000 sq metre site at Glan Gors and three houses on a 690 sq metre site at Arenig Road.
Eight houses have been proposed for a 5,000 sq metre site at St Giles Crescent near town.
The plans are part of a massive blueprint by Wrexham Council to create more affordable homes in the county.
A total of 23 areas across the borough have been earmarked for development with about 250 homes to be built.
The plans will be discussed in more detail in terms of house numbers at future planning meetings.
