New Flintshire housing plan gets the go-ahead

A MAJOR housing development is set to go ahead.

An application to build 137 houses on land at Ffordd Newydd in Connah's Quay was given full support at a Flintshire Council planning meeting, despite a row over affordable housing.

At a meeting last month, members rejected an offer by developers David Wilson Homes  to make 18 per cent of the homes affordable.

However, full planning permission was granted this week after developers upped their offer to 30 per cent.

Mostyn councillor Patrick Heesom told the meeting: “Finally, this is in keeping with the council’s policy regarding affordable housing.

“We should commend the developers for coming back to us and meeting us on this.”

Andrew Farrow, head of planning for Flintshire Council, also urged members to back the proposal.

He said: “We really need to be getting this site on the market.

“This is a major site for the unitary development plan. We are giving these homes away as affordable housing which is a good thing considering this authority’s track record of not doing so.”

Plans for the 5.52 hectare site sparked furious protests from nearby residents.

As the Leader has reported previously, Connah’s Quay councillor David Barratt believed people in Connah's Quay ‘would no longer be able to live comfortably’ if it were to go ahead.

The Clwyd Badger Group also raised fears about a potential loss of badger foraging ground and the local Ramblers’ Association said an increase in traffic could ‘conflict with pedestrians’.

Meanwhile Welsh Water said the local sewerage system would be overloaded.
