Cash will help Wrexham estate project create jobs

A PARTNERSHIP set up to regenerate one of Wales’s poorest council estates has won almost £250,000 to create jobs.

The money has been awarded to the Caia Park Partnership through the Intermediate Labour Market (ILM) project, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly and European cash.

The funding will allow 48 local people to go through a programme to develop their skills and will provide four months’ employment in catering, retail, care work and woodcraft.

Caia Park is the largest council-built estate in North Wales and the partnership was set up by local people, church leaders and councillors to provide services and facilities to regenerate the estate and support residents.

The programme is targeting the long-term unemployed including lone parents, young people and people with a health condition or disability which means their work is affected.

Everyone taking part will gain new qualifications and it is hoped more than half will go into permanent jobs at the end of the programme.

Paul Rogers, 20, from Wrexham is one of the first people to go through Caia Park’s ILM programme.

Out of work for two years, Paul is now working in an administrative role and developing office-based skills and qualifications.

He said: “This programme is really boosting my confidence and I’ve already gained a new qualification in the short time I’ve been here.

“It’s been a great way to get back into work.”

The tories are now using private firms to go after benefit fraud.BF is estimated at 5 billion a year. However the National Fraud authority estimates 1.1 billion a year). At the same time Tax Research states that 95 billion(yes you did read that right 95 billion) a year is being lost through tax evasion, mostly by corporations and private individuals(rich ones). So why dont we train the gentle folk of Caia into Tax fraud investigators, and go after the real criminals.

Tommy...Great and incisive comment....but take a look at the list of training opportunities on offer.... we gentle folk of Caia it seems are too thick to aspire to anything above the level of hairdresser or catering... Caia built by the Towns business folk to ensure a ready supply of labour still adheres to that principle... 48 training places is highly unlikely to have any measurable impact on the woeful employment record of the estate

a cahill...spot on..the stunning assumption that the people of caia are only capable of doing boring low paid jobs,is nothing short of an insult,I would happily bet that the distribution of intelligence on Caia is similar to eveywhere else and given the right training and motivation the people of caia are just as capable as anyone else.

Surely paying credit "bounty hunters" to catch benefit fraudsters is going to cost money? They will have to be paid well for what they do, probably more than what they save! Another govt gimmick, different government, same gimmicky spin. As an ex QP resident I have to agree about the bias and prejudice shown in certain areas.
