A NEW generation of trains could be built in Flintshire, creating up to 800 jobs.
The Hitachi site on Deeside Industrial Park has been shortlisted to build the new inter-city express trains and production could start in 2013 if the Government approves the £7.5billion contract.
The firm’s Newton Aycliffe factory in County Durham is also in the running.
A Hitachi Europe spokeswoman said: “The Government is looking at every contract like this to ensure that it represents the best value for money.
“We are still waiting to learn whether this programme will go ahead, but we are looking forward to a positive decision.”
The new trains, which will replace the existing inter-city fleet, are expected to be more environmentally friendly, carry more passengers and reach higher speeds.
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami is backing the bid. He has written to Hitachi and the Welsh Assembly Government in support of bringing the work to Deeside.
He said: “I’m pressing hard for Deeside to be selected. It would be extremely welcome. I would encourage the company to give full consideration to Deeside and the excellent quality workforce available in this area.”
A Welsh Assembly Government spokeswoman said: “We have had contact with Hitachi and we would welcome any decision to invest in Wales.”
