A WEEK long community clean up designed to improve part of a Chester community is under way.

Organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC), the ‘Safer, Stronger’ event will take place in Kingsway culminating in a Youth and Community Fun Day.

A number of agencies are involved in the event including CWaC, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, Cheshire Police, Chester and District Housing Trust and Kingsway and Newton Residents’ Association.

Throughout the week Streetscene will remove graffiti and weeds near the shops as well as fly-tipping from the rear of the old Woodfield Primary School site while also cleaning  a car park and paved area.

Chester and District Housing Trust will cut hedges and grass on its land, as well as general weeding and tiding of shrub beds.

Fly-tipping and the removal of bulk items from communal yards, litter picking and tidying of wheelie bin storage will also be carried out.

Saturday, August 21 will see a big fun day event taking place at Lime Wood Field between 11am and 3pm. Activities will include a five a-side football match, African drumming, face painting, a bouncy castle, bike repairs and advice on fire prevention and details about how to join a credit union.

The event will also feature community safety and crime prevention advice such as bike engraving and the promotion of Homewatch.

Hoole and Newton Councillors John Ebo, Bob Thompson and Adrian Walmsley sponsored the special day from their own individual Members Fund.
Cllr Walmsley said: “I am delighted that the Kingsway area has been chosen for the Chester Safer Stronger initiative.

“Kingsway will definitely benefit and I hope that some of the initiatives will continue in some form as a permanent long standing arrangement.

“As a member of Cheshire Police Authority I welcome in particular the role Police beat officers and Police Community Safety Officers will undertake during the week.”

During the initiative there will be increased Police presence, as well as Council Community Safety Wardens on site. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service will be offering fire safety advice.

Volunteers from D’Biz Christian-based youth organisation will be carrying out cycle MOTs and will help with any litter picking after the event on Lime Wood Field following the Youth and Community Day.
