POLICE have made a fresh appeal to witnesses after a play area was torched killing animals and destroying toys.

Bosses at Little Angels Day Nursery at St Mary’s of the Angels school, Ellesmere Port, blasted yobs who set fire to an outdoor area, toy sheds and rabbit hutches, burning rabbits alive.

Police arrested five people in the weeks following the incident on April 28, but officers say no-one was charged in relation to the offence.

Karen Reeves, who runs the Rossall Grove nursery along with Cathy Lewis, told of her devastation after being woken by news of the shock blaze

“It is utterly and completely inhumane,” she said. “This is devastating. I am at a  complete loss to understand how anybody could do such a thing.

“How could they do that to those poor  animals? There were two mothers and week old baby rabbits in those hutches.

“It is just so upsetting. The children loved the rabbits, they looked after them and played with them every day

“It is so upsetting for the children who got so much out of playing with the rabbits. We have had to lead the children in another way today and shut the blinds so they cannot see what has happened.

“I hope these people are brought to justice, otherwise what is society coming to? If these people can burn animals alive then what next”.

Police forensics were called in to find the nursery’s entire outside area destroyed.  A part of a chicken coup has also been destroyed, Fortunately the chickens were not on the premises at the time of the blaze just before 3am.

Police spokeswoman Shelley Williiams said: “We continue to appeal to anyone with any information in relation to this incident to contact Ellesmere Port NPU on 0845 458 0000."Bosses at Little Angels Day Nursery at St Mary’s of the Angels school, Ellesmere Port, blasted yobs who set fire to an outdoor area, toy sheds and rabbit hutches, burning rabbits alive.
