A PAIR of veteran swimmers are celebrating after becoming world champions.
Brenda and Tom Walker, who train at the city baths in Chester, recently competed in the World Masters Swimming Championships, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
More than 6,000 participants from all over the world took part in the seven day event which was held in two 50 metre pools, one indoor and one outdoor with men and women switching pools each day.
In her third year competiting in the 70 to 74 age group, Brenda became world champion in the 200m and the 50m backstroke, both events in the outdoor pool in heavy rain.
She gained a silver medal in the 100m backstroke and came sixth in the 200m freestyle in a field of 26 swimmers, and had two fourth places in relay teams.
Tom, in his first year in the 75 to 79 age group, also became world champion in two events, the 100m and the 200m breaststroke. He took silver medal in the 50m breaststroke bronze in the 200m backstroke and fifth place in the 200m individual medley.
As they were the only two Chester swimmers attending the competition they swam for their second claimed club Southport to enable them to swim in relay events.
