A POLITICIAN returned to higher education during a visit to the University of Chester.

Chester’s Conservative MP Stephen Mosley was given a tour of the various research and teaching laboratories across campus before attending a series of presentations.

As a member of the government’s Science and Technology Select Committee, Mr Mosley, himself a chemistry graduate, was visiting the university to find out about the research work that is carried out there.

He met specialists from biological sciences, sport and exercise sciences, mathematics, computer science and the informatics centre.

Mr Mosley said: “Both as the local member of Parliament and as a newly appointed member of the Science and Technology Select Committee, I was keen to see the work of the applied sciences faculty at the University of Chester.

“I was very impressed to see the dedication and enthusiasm of both lecturers and postgraduate students in the faculty and to see some of the cutting edge and innovative research currently being undertaken at the university.

“I was also impressed by the success that the university is having in commercialising the results of its students and researchers’ intellectual developments.”

Dean of research, Professor Neville Ford, said: “This was a great opportunity for us to show him the vibrant science culture at the university and tell him about the excellent work that is being carried out on campus.”
