DENBIGH TOWN LADIES 1
LLANDUDNO JUNCTION 5
DENBIGH Town kicked off their league season with a very good display, but ultimately slipped to a 5-1 reverse against goal hungry Llandudno Junction Ladies, reports Peter Glynn at Central Park.
Early doors action saw Denbigh all over the visitors who are being touted as one of the best sides in the North Wales Women’s League.
Town created a number of opportunities, Chelsea firing across goal after breaking through via a Hafwen through ball. Next Amy Lou bullied a ball towards Mari who left her marker for dead but shot just wide.
At the other end Val in the Denbigh nets pulled off a brave save at the feet of a galloping Junctioner.
The visitors were breaking well and after 20 minutes took the lead from a close-range effort.
Junction were now looking hungry for more but Siwan had an inspired period, chasing down the fleet-footed Junction forwards and never shirking a challenge.
Two others had to be at their best as Llan now scented blood. Llio and Ruth Williams had to use pace and experience to block off an effort from a flag kick.
Junction grabbed another goal courtesy of a curler around the wall from a free kick, yet Denbigh never let their heads drop.
The first stanza had seen a lot of Denbigh possession - including a fantastic move featuring Laura, Mari and Chelsea before the ball was hacked to safety - but Llan had the goals.
They made it 3-0 on 47 minutes after a good run eluded the Town defence, but the moment of the match as far as Denbigh were concerned saw Mari Edwards show her greatest asset - speed - leaving her opponent in her trail and racing on to fire into a bulging net.
A cracker of a goal by the speedy youngster.
Another Denbigh goal would make things twitchy, but Llandudno Junction put the game to bed with two more goals before the final whistle.
It was a promising start to the season for Denbigh, albeit in defeat.
There are others to return to the team and Denbigh Town Ladies will be stronger for that.
