THE plight of domestic abuse victims in Chester is set to be highlighted during an international campaign day.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 will see people across the UK proudly displaying their white ribbon of support and Cheshire West and Chester Council has backed the campaign.
The authority’s Domestic Abuse Partnership is encouraging its partners and members of the public to organise events using suggestions from the website www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk
Cllr Jill Houlbrook, who donated £320 of her Member Grant Budget to purchasing ribbons and banners for the campaign, said: “I am extremely pleased to use part of my Member Budget Grant to support this essential campaign.
Cllr Houlbrook said: “So many people across the UK, and indeed the world, are working hard to help combat domestic abuse and I am delighted to be able to assist with such a worthwhile cause.”
On Thursday, November 25, local vocalising trio The Harmonettes will be singing alongside Chester Women’s Aid and local refuge staff on Chester Town Hall Square between 5pm and 7pm. They will hand out white ribbons to raise money for charities that support women and children experiencing domestic abuse.
Ribbons will be available from Cheshire West and Chester Council offices and police stations.
Chester FC players will also show their support for the cause by wearing the white ribbons at their home fixture against Skelmersdale United.
