The last five years in the mobile phone world has undoubtedly been the age of the smartphone. Whereas before these handsets may have been considered the more expensive, luxurious option, 2010 brought with it a new batch of affordable and performance-enhanced versions for even the most novice mobile users.

LG is one company that has made the smartphone more accessible to the public as a whole, rather than as a simple solution for the business person. While some of the best smartphones are perfect for managing emails, business plans and even spreadsheets on the go, new models are ever more appealing to gaming, Internet-surfing and socialising phone users.

There was once a time when as long as a phone could ring, text and you had the ultimate addictive game, Snake, it was considered a success. The new generation of touch phones means you can now be in touch with everyone and share every aspect of your life wherever you are.

So, what is a smartphone? While there is no universal definition, smartphones share a few basic features; wireless Internet access, touch screen, push email, downloadable applications and in many cases a sat-nav capability. With keyboard-style text input, it makes emails and contact as simple as using a computer.

There are a huge number of smartphones available on the mobile phone market today, and 2010 saw a vast increase in the models and brands up for grabs. Since the days of the iPhone and HTC, smartphones have often been looked upon as an expensive choice when it comes to buying a new mobile phone, but as more manufacturers have delved into the market there are ever more competitors for the ultimate smartphone title.

There is a great selection of touch phones and smartphones from LG that came onto the market last year. From simple phones that have a touch screen, to more sophisticated options that allow you to manage the myriad details of your life on the go. Pre-loaded apps and many more to download, either for free or for a small cost, make the handsets essential for everything you need to know and anything you need to do.

LG’s Android phones were rated some of the best developed throughout 2010, and it’s not hard to see why. September saw the launch of LG’s latest phones within its Optimus range; running on Android 2.2 (Google’s mobile operating system) it works at three times faster than other smartphones on the market. Optimus smartphones have been optimised for Google platforms, including the ever popular Google Maps.

Smartphones are generally reviewed according to the following criteria; design, multimedia, call quality and call features, memory and storage and finally the addiction features they provide. In terms of these features, LG has provided a whole lot more phone for your money, whether you are buying for business or just for your personal use, these phones have been painstakingly designed to cater for all uses. From gaming to music to entertainment to social networking, there is an app for everything from arranging business meetings to ordering a pizza.

LG prides itself on the design of its range of mobile phones as a whole, and its 2010 collection of smartphones is the ultimate statement of self-expression. Touch screen phones are notorious for being big in size due to the plethora of features, yet as the years have gone by LG has developed phones that have reduced in size but still perform optimally.

The LG Optimus has appeared in many top 2010 smartphone lists as one of the best Windows phones on the market. It’s the extras that LG has invested into this model that set it above its rivals; including augmented reality browsers that show the user the weather when pointed at the sky. With a 7.2 mega pixel rear mounted camera and a 3.8-inch touch display, the LG Optimus sets itself apart from other Windows-run smartphones. 16 GB on internal memory (and 32 GB on the Optimus One) means that all music, films, email and applications that have been downloaded can all be run at the same time, without a drop in performance, thanks to the 5.7 megabytes per second download speeds.

There is a prevalent misunderstanding that all Windows run phones are generally the same, yet despite running on a Windows platform, LG has differentiated itself from other similar smartphones in order to attract a wider customer base; panorama camera features and apps such as ScanSearch are attractions you won’t find on most Windows smartphones.

Ultra responsive touch screen and appropriately sorted icons make LG smartphones easy to use and quick to familiarise yourself with. A refreshingly un-bulky collection of phones, the design has been perfectly tweaked to rival even the most expensive options on the market. Sleek designs and slim builds mean that all this productivity comes in a lightweight package, so managing your business and personal affairs on the go has never been easier.

Being connected on the go is a top requirement for all smartphones on the market. All LG smartphones work on a 3G and Wi-Fi carrier basis, meaning that you can work via the Internet at home, office or many of the free Wi-Fi spots throughout the UK, but these phones can also be used where Wi-Fi is not available via 3G. With a large value of download available on various contracts (usually around 1GB per month) working away from home gives you near-PC webpage download speeds, something also available on pay as you go for a higher cost.

Synchronising your phone with your PC is one of the main attractions of investing in an LG smartphone. This means that backing up vital and important contacts, emails and documents is foolproof. Though this may only seem an appeal to the business users, it is also a must for backing up all those valuable photos and phone numbers that can also give personal users peace of mind.

In a market that was long dominated by the likes of Apple, at last smaller and more phone-focused companies like LG are coming to light with new and innovative designs in both the design and the functionality of smartphones.
