MEN in Chester who are being abused by someone close to them are the focus of a newly launched campaign.

Figures reveal that about a fifth of all victims of domestic abuse reported in Cheshire between April and December last year were men.

Cheshire Police hopes to reach out to victims as Valentine’s Day approaches, a time of year traditionally associated with love but often sees a rise in the number of such incidents.

Assistant Chief Constable Phil Thompson, who leads on domestic abuse for Cheshire, said: “Traditionally the emphasis has been on female victims of abuse but it is important to highlight the fact that many victims of domestic abuse are also men. Men in particular find it hard to speak out if they are being abused, but we want to reassure anyone who may be suffering at the hands of another, that domestic abuse is an issue that we take extremely seriously, whatever time of the year.”

GP surgeries, community centres and shops will have information about contacting the police and details of how to access national and local support services.

Information will also be placed in key locations such as sporting venues.
If you are a victim of domestic abuse, are worried that someone close to you is experiencing domestic abuse or are concerned about your own behaviour please contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000. In an emergency always dial 999. For more information go to www.cheshire.police.uk.
