FOOTBALL: West Cheshire round up 05.01.10

CASTROL SOCIAL and West Kirby have progressed to the last four of the Cheshire County FA Amateur Cup.

In the South Wirral derby, Castrol Social made it through at the expense of their Whitby Road neighbours, Ellesmere Port.

A solitary strike from Jordan Brierley settled the issue in the Oilmen's favour.

Cup holders, West Kirby, edged a step nearer to retaining the trophy, after they claimed the scalp of Division One title rivals, Runcorn Town.

The quarter final clash at Marine Park saw John Brett's outfit emerge 2-0 victors from a competitive encounter, thanks to a Kris Hesketh’s effort and a Lee Gibson penalty.

On the minus side, Newton's tie with Chester Nomads and Willaston's match at Woodley were both victims of the freezing conditions, and both games have now been re-scheduled for this weekend.

On the domestic scene, goals from Marine reserves' Rowan Garnett and Alex Clarke failed to stem the Heswall tide, as the Division one pacesetters pulled five points clear of the chasing pack, following an emphatic 5-2 victory.

A smart double from Nathan Mapletoft was supplemented by further efforts from Danny Menhard, Matty Houghton and Danny Cowell, as Ged Peacock's charges consolidated their position at the top.

Another high scoring contest took place at Upton AA, where the hosts netted via Will Kelly, Simon Andrews and Carl Bishop, but still went home pointless.

Visitors Maghull produced their joker in four-goal star Lee Tynan, and a further effort from Sam Wilkie cemented a 5-3 result.

Goals from Neil Smith and Mike New helped Mesrsey Royal to a 2-2 draw with Ashville reserves in Division Three. Andy Johnston and Paul Angelsey replied for the visitors.

The only other fixture which escaped the weather proved profitable for fourth placed Bebington Athletic against Hale in the Youth Division. The 6-0 scoreline was confirmed by a hat trick from Sean Heggarty and singles from Tommy Byrne, Kieran Brown and Danny Blades.

Apart from the outstanding Cheshire County FA Amateur Cup ties, key games this Saturday see Wirral and District FA Senior Cup final semi-final places up for grabs.

Heswall will be difficult to oppose against Ellesmere Port, while Cammell Laird reserves are favorites to account for struggling Vauxhall Motors reserves.
