A STUDENT hopes to raise funds for abused and neglected children when he holds a major sports event later this year in Chester.

Adam Christopher, of Saddlery Way, is appealing for sponsorship from individuals and businesses across the region for a fun day football tournament he plans to hold at the Northgate Arena on March 6.

Adam, 20, hopes to get about 10 football teams to take part in the day’s activities, with all profits raised to go to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Adam, who studies business management at the University of Chester, said: “This is the first time I have done anything like this. I am a regular donator to the NSPCC, but I thought, why not put this into practice.

“I coach in my spare time as well. I am hoping this event will be one of many, but I guess I am waiting to see what the turn-out is going to be like. In the meantime I am going to distribute fliers around the university and to see if they can support me by making a few announcements.”

Adam, who plays football for Vauxhall Motors Reserves, will be charging people £5 to play.

He added: “We’ll probably manage to generate about £250, but after paying costs for rent and advertisement we may only get to give around £55 to the charity.”

The NSPCC, which was founded in 1884, lobbies the government on issues relating to child welfare, and creates campaigns for the general public, with the intention of raising awareness of child protection issues.

The charity also runs 177 local services, which offer general family support as well as more specific services such as working with families with alcohol problems.
