ELECTION candidates have been asked to back Chester Cycling Campaign’s cycling manifesto.

All six currently nominated election candidates have been asked if they support the campaign which aims to encourage the maximum use of bikes in Chester.

Candidates have been asked to commit to its aim to double cycle use within ten years, making cycling mainstream in the longer term.

Simon Brown, from the campaign, said: “We wanted to get a commitment from all the candidates for the forthcoming General Election to support the aim of the cycling manifesto to help make our local area much more pleasant and sustainable in the long term.

“Central Government has a major role to promote the sort of culture which is present in Denmark or Holland where the bicycle is seen as the perfectly normal and sensible mode of transport for short local journeys.

“Such a culture change requires both central and local government support and resources, and will provide significant payoffs right across the country through investment in health and quality of life.”

Chester cycling campaigners will highlight candidates responses so that constituents can include the issue in their considerations when voting.
